IJMSC Insights: AI and MS Care/Research

IJMSC Insights offers a closer look at the latest research and the people behind it from the community of the International Journal of Multiple Sclerosis Care (IJMSC) and the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers (CMSC).

We want your opinions and experiences!

As technology advances, artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the landscape of medicine, reaching into all areas of multiple sclerosis practice, including `clinical care and research. Whether it is reducing the amount of pajama time for notes required after clinic hours or the patient portal offering replies to inquiries, we are seeing and using AI in our workplaces. And who hasn't asked ChatGPT to summarize something that we want to quickly understand?

The possibilities of AI use in research abound as well, with machine learning offering the ability to extract and summarize information from large datasets and to remotely monitor patients, collecting real-world, real-time data. How will trials and interventions be transformed by the power of AI?

Perhaps the most exciting and daunting area of AI possibilities is in diagnosis. Will AI offer a gateway to personalized medicine by finding lesions unable to be seen by the human eye, predicting an individual’s response to a particular disease-modifying therapy, or integrating a variety of data to predict patient disease progression?

Will the next life-altering advancement in the care and treatment of people with MS be found with the help of AI?

We asked the editors of the International Journal of Multiple Sclerosis Care to share their experiences with and uses of AI to date in the video above. Francois Bethoux, MD; Alissa Willis, MD; and Elizabeth Gromisch, PhD, come from different clinical backgrounds and have differing areas of focus. They add their perspectives to this ever-expanding conversation. Watch the video and then please take a moment to participate in our survey to share your own feelings and experiences. Your input is vital to helping us understand our evolving field. The future of AI in MS care and research is a conversation in which we all need to participate.
