IJMSC articles within each calendar year are in contention for 2 awards. The Herndon Award for Outstanding IJMSC Article is in honor of Robert M. Herndon, the founding editor of IJMSC. The paper's corresponding author is given $1000. The Promise Award for the best article first-authored by an early-career investigator is given in memory of past IJMSC editor Lael A. Stone and carries a $500 prize.
The decision process starts with the editor in chief selecting appropriate articles published in the previous year and sending them to a judging panel of 3 to 4 peers. Judges do change occasionally, and those with potential conflicts of interest are to recuse themselves as applicable. The panel is known to each other but are asked not to discuss the articles or ratings during the process. Each judge individually rates the articles based on criteria for original research and nonresearch articles. The scores from all of the judges are tallied to determine the winning article.
This year's winning article is “Validity and Reliability of the Scale to Report Emotional Stress Signs–Multiple Sclerosis (STRESS-MS) in Assessing Abuse and Neglect of Adults With Multiple Sclerosis.” The article was published in the January/February 2022 issue (Volume 24, Issue 1) of IJMSC. Elizabeth H Morrison, MD, MSEd, the paper's corresponding author, was on-hand to receive the award. Her coauthors were Dara Sorkin, PhD; Laura Mosqueda, MD; and Napatkamon Ayutyanont, PhD.
